Offering to do a few errands is a great start but a little chit chat out in the garden might be just what the doctor ordered. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that older couples couldn’t use a little company just because they have each other. Many couples that have been married for more than 10 years don’t even talk to each other, can you even imagine what happens after 20 or 30 years? As a matter of fact if you don’t seen both of them every once in a while you might want to start asking some questions.

Some ideas for brightening your older neighbor’s day:

Carry On Oki

You no longer have to go to a Karaoke-specific bar or know someone with fancy equipment.

There are a few things we can thank COVID-19 and Quarantine for, though admittedly, the list is very short. One of those is the mass adoption of online gatherings. All you need now is a few friends or family, a computer with a camera and microphone and then you’re all set to have a fun night of karaoke at home!
If you’re organizing this little shindig around Halloween you might consider having a “Scaryoke” party, complete with costumes holiday themed backgrounds and appropriate song choices. (See list at bottom of page).

You only need 3 things to host a Virtual Karaoke party:

  1. Zoom (or any virtual meeting/party app)
  2. Watch2Gether: create a party room for your guests and as they join, you’ll all see the same screen
  3. A list of friends and family

Set up your party via Zoom and Watch2Gether and send invites to your friends and family.

Best Practices:

  • Have each person submit their songs beforehand and find the karaoke version of the song on YouTube or Vimeo. We have yet to think of a song that doesn’t have a Karaoke track with on-screen lyrics on one of those two platforms
  • After receiving everyone’s songs, create a setlist that keeps the momentum strong. One slow song to every 2 fast-paced songs. Too many slow songs in a row can slow things down too much!
  • To keep everyone engaged, don’t let them know the setlist ahead of time. If you know that you’re performing 4th in line, you may tune out until song #3. But if you don’t’ know when your name may be called, you’ll be engaged and paying attention.
  • Keep it positive! Anyone who has the nerve to sing in front of their friends and family deserves a round of applause!

Social DisDancing

So you think I can dance? Well I can’t. But YOU can!

Father Figure

The next best thing to giving Dad or Granddad a hug is to send him one! This is a fantastic activity for kids and grand-kids and will result in a keepsake that Dad will cherish forever. Imagine his delight when he opens the envelope and sees that the children have designed and colored in an artistic representation of themselves. He can immediately wrap the hug around him and make him feel connected, appreciated and loved.

Here are some simple instructions:
Step 1: If you have a roll of art paper, great! Cut off a 5 ft length. If you don’t have a roll of art paper then glue or tape five pieces of plain paper together end-to-end. Then glue one more piece in the center that will stick up from the rest and go under your child’s head.
Step 2: Have your child lie down on the paper with their arms outstretched and trace their arms, hands, fingers and head.
Step 3: Using colored pencils, crayons, or paints have your child create a beautiful image of themselves.
Step 5: Carefully cut out the image around the original trace lines.
Step 6: Accordion fold the arms inward and then fold the head down over the arms. This will leave you with a blank piece facing up where your child can write a greeting about the hug.

Tie One On

Ties have become a staple as a Father’s Day gift. Instead of fighting the predictability why not embrace it? Get your father a fun or crazy tie. One that says to him that you know he is different than all the other dads and truly deserving of something unique.

Do your kids know where you buried the gold bars? Are you really prepared for an emergency? Most people think they are ready but if you sit down and analyze your plans there is always room for improvement. The only thing worse than thinking about all this is NOT thinking about it.
