Hollow? Who’s This?

The Jack-O’-Lantern tradition started in Ireland in the early 1900’s when people would hollow out and carve scary faces in potatoes and turnips to ward off evil spirits. The most prominent of these spirits was called, “Stingy Jack” and he would come to call on All Hallows Eve.

Although I’m not a strong believer in spirits or demons, I did break up with someone once for always calling me “Pumpkin”. While I knew it was just a term of endearment I couldn’t help but feel like the contents of my head were slowly being scooped out.

In any case if you decide to make a Jack O’Lantern I hope that you and your family will explore the wide range of creative possibilities. With a good set of pumpkin carving tools you can do some very detailed work including recreating celebrities, politicians and historical figures.

My son did an excellent job making a very convincing “Trumpkin”. It certainly didn’t hurt that it was already orange.

Boomf - Surprise Them

Scare Mail

Give the grandparents, aunts and uncles who can’t participate in Trick-or-Treat this year a Treat they’ll love and cherish forever! This is a fantastic activity for kids and grand-kids and will result in a great memory and keepsake to bring some levity to Quarantine-Halloween 2020.

BONUS: Special deals and other arts and crafts for Halloween at the end!

Imagine their delight when they open the envelope and see that instead of being on the receiving end of a traditional store-bought card, the children have sent them a treat with a designed and colored artistic representation of themselves in their Halloween character. Don’t forget to add the word “BOO! for extra effect. You can even let them know to zoom call when they receive it so your child can watch their reaction when they open it for the first time. They can immediately wrap the hug around themselves and feel connected, appreciated and loved.

Here are some simple instructions:
Step 1: If you have a roll of art paper, great! Cut off a 5 ft length. If you don’t have a roll of art paper then glue or tape five pieces of plain paper together end-to-end. Then glue one more piece in the center that will stick up from the rest and go under your child’s head.
Step 2: Have your child lie down on the paper with their arms outstretched and trace their arms, hands, fingers and head.
Step 3: Using colored pencils, crayons, or paints have your child create a beautiful image of themselves.
Step 5: Carefully cut out the image around the original trace lines.
Step 6: Accordion fold the arms inward and then fold the head down over the arms. This will leave you with a blank piece facing up where your child can write a greeting about the hug.

Scaryoke

You no longer have to go to a Karaoke-specific bar or know someone with fancy equipment.

There are a few things we can thank COVID-19 and Quarantine for, though admittedly, the list is very short. One of those is the mass adoption of online gatherings. All you need now is a few friends or family, a computer with a camera and microphone and then you’re all set to have a fun night of karaoke at home!
If you’re organizing this little shindig around Halloween you might consider having a “Scaryoke” party, complete with costumes holiday themed backgrounds and appropriate song choices. (See list at bottom of page).

You only need 3 things to host a Virtual Karaoke party:

  1. Zoom (or any virtual meeting/party app)
  2. Watch2Gether: create a party room for your guests and as they join, you’ll all see the same screen
  3. A list of friends and family

Set up your party via Zoom and Watch2Gether and send invites to your friends and family.

Best Practices:

  • Have each person submit their songs beforehand and find the karaoke version of the song on YouTube or Vimeo. We have yet to think of a song that doesn’t have a Karaoke track with on-screen lyrics on one of those two platforms
  • After receiving everyone’s songs, create a setlist that keeps the momentum strong. One slow song to every 2 fast-paced songs. Too many slow songs in a row can slow things down too much!
  • To keep everyone engaged, don’t let them know the setlist ahead of time. If you know that you’re performing 4th in line, you may tune out until song #3. But if you don’t’ know when your name may be called, you’ll be engaged and paying attention.
  • Keep it positive! Anyone who has the nerve to sing in front of their friends and family deserves a round of applause!

Stay Back & Toss Candy

For contactless candy distribution consider hollowing out a pumpkin to fit a plastic bowl then placing the candies inside for kids to take.

If you put out a little sign that says “please take one” or “please take two”, you’d be amazed how honest most kids are.

If you’re looking for something a little more Hands-On and fun, you can throw a string over a tree limb and attach it to a skeleton arm. The end of the arm can have a clothespin or bulldog clip that holds a piece of candy. When the kids come up the walkway you can lower the arm to hand them the candy.

Another fun way is by putting eyelets in the back of a rubber bat and threading it on a wire that runs down the walkway. The bat can fly down to the kids with treats clipped to it.

If all of this seems like too much work then put out a sign that says, “stay back and watch out for flying treats” then just toss the candy. It sounds a little strange but these are strange times we’re living in.

I actually think it can be a lot of fun to try and toss the candy up and have the kids catch them in their bags but then again my father fed me dinner with a slingshot from across the dining room table.
