Empty out the sock drawer and tell your kids there is a prize for whoever matches the most pairs of socks. If you only have one child or your older children are too savvy to be tricked into sorting socks then I suggest you prepare to participate in the festivities. I don’t think this activity needs any more explanation and frankly I’ve said too much already.

Shock Puppets

Puppets are an excellent way for kids to express themselves creatively and to experiment with interpersonal relationship dynamics. There is not only a lot to be learned by watching your child’s puppets interact with each other but really listening to what the puppets have to say.

Your child can start with homemade finger puppets or sock puppets and then move on to pre-made character puppets and even elaborate marionettes. Naturally it’s great if your child has their own ideas for plays and possible set decoration but it might be a nice idea to offer some fun scenarios to begin with. Making a puppet theater out of an appliance box is an awesome afternoon project but there are also plenty of adorable puppet theaters that can be bought online. You’ll be amazed how much more active and enthusiastic the puppet’s dialogue and behavior will be if your child gets to hide behind the staging area.

If the puppets start to have conversations that concern you, please immediately contact a therapist. By the way the therapy is for you since it’s perfectly normal for your kids to act out unusual fantasies with their puppets.

The world is divided into two schools of thought where it comes to bunnies, hamsters and ferrets. One thought is that they are soft cuddly animals. The other way of thinking is that they are rats dressed in clever disguises. Whichever way you lean the fact is that children seem to love and want to cuddle them.If your child has a pet it builds a feeling of responsibility, develops nurturing behavior and encourages empathy. Animals also give your child a friend that is always there and even has tiny little shoulders to cry on. If you’re not 100% sold on the idea just think of all the free fertilizer for your tomato plants.

Create a few scenarios throughout the day where your child can come to your rescue. Your child may already have a favorite superhero but encouraging them to make up their own can be very empowering. Have your child invent their own superhero name, super powers and of course an interesting secret identity.

A cape is not a must but a cleverly designed superhero mask can help them stay safe in public areas.

Peanut Putter

Whether it’s putt-putt, driving range practice or a full 18 holes on a real course, a tiny ball being hit with a tiny club into a tiny hole by a tiny person can be a lot of fun. It can also be fun for a medium, large or extra large person as well. Most people I know who play golf say that they are terrible at it but to your child you’ll look like some sort of expert. Golfing and teaching your child to hit a ball is an extremely bonding experience and can provoke lots of smiles even and especially when you’re terrible at it. Golf also has the advantage of being something you can do together at a safe distance from other folks even on a putt-putt course. Mini golf clubs and bags are completely unique and unexpected gifts worthy of birthdays, holidays or just as a surprise.
It usually only takes a few tries for your kid to get into the swing of things. The hard part is not being depressed when you’re 7-year-old is better than you at it. At that point you’ll probably want to stop keeping score.
